Vaginal diode laser

What I can do in my practice, always as part of a plan designed for you.

Frequently asked questions

A gentle laser applied to the vaginal lining to improve its moisture and elasticity.

The laser stimulates the lining to produce collagen and improves its blood supply. I use it for menopausal dryness and atrophy, mild incontinence and some cases of pain during sex.

It is done in my office in a few sessions and is usually more uncomfortable than painful. It is not the first option for everyone: we consider it when the basic measures have not been enough or are not suitable for you.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you not suggest it straight away?

Because it is not the first option for everyone. For menopausal dryness and atrophy we start with the basics — moisturisers and lubricants, and local oestrogen when indicated — and the laser is considered when that has not been enough or is not suitable for you.

Does the laser hurt?

It is usually more uncomfortable than painful. It is done in my office over a few sessions; how many depends on your case, and we agree that at the assessment.

Will it help with leaking urine?

For mild or moderate stress incontinence the laser can be added to the treatment, but it does not replace it: the foundation is still pelvic floor work, properly learnt. And if your case needs a different solution, I will tell you clearly.

How long does the effect last? Does it have to be repeated?

It is not a definitive treatment. The usual scheme is a course of around three sessions a few weeks apart and then the occasional maintenance session, spaced out over time. Exactly how long it lasts is not well established: periods of around a year are quoted, but that figure comes mainly from case series and from the manufacturers themselves rather than from solid studies, and the trials comparing the laser with a sham treatment have not found a clear difference on several of the measures. I would rather tell you it as it is and weigh it up with you as we go, instead of committing you to a timescale.

Whether a test or treatment is right for you is decided together, in consultation, after assessing your case. This page is for information only and does not replace a medical assessment.
